The article presents a historical and philosophical study of the main ideas American thinker Puritan era, John Cotton (1585–1652). renowned worked as priest both in England colonies. He was known an outstanding theologian philosopher Massachusetts Bay Colony. future received his education at Trinity College Emmanuel Cambridge. His reputation associated with ability to preach knowledge theology, but views also contained place for reflections. supporter philosophy opposed Catholicism, which reflected works. In addition, he Anglican Church, considered insufficiently separated from Catholicism. However, religion, there desire purify faith unnecessary burden. on religion made it possible create movement, placed great emphasis personal rejected many customs rituals that were unnecessary. On one hand, J. critic church institution, other did not support separation it. maintained balance believed expulsion ideological opponent, Roger Williams, related danger ideas. man cannot save himself depends God's grace. took part important polemical discussions colonies, where religious determined settlers' way life. dialogue truth arises only dialogue.
